MY PL TEAM OF THE SEASON (THUS FAR)

GK: Alisson Becker

Probably the best goalkeeper of my generation, no goalkeeper in the Premier League for the past couple of years has been able to lace Alisson’s boots. Excellent at 1v1 situations, his save percentage stands at over 79.7% (the highest of any goalkeeper this season).

LB: Destiny Udogie

Playing his first season in the Premier League, Destiny Udogie has been one of the standout players in Ange Postecoglou’s new and exciting Spurs side. Hugely admired for his technical and attacking prowess, it is no wonder he fit in like a glove into Ange’s high-intensity and possession-orientated style of play.

CB: William Saliba

Over the last year and a half, Saliba has come to be the most integral player to Arteta’s Arsenal. After being sent out on loan a couple of times, the once-world’s most feted teenage centre-back led Arsenal to a title charge but got an injury mid-season. That injury derailed Arsenal’s title hopes, but the Frenchman is back to his best and has Arsenal challenging once more. The sense is that, should Saliba stay fit this time around, Arsenal should be contenders to the bitter end.

CB: Virgil Van Dijk

Liverpool are currently top of the table and it’s mainly because their Rolls Royce of a defender, Virgil Van Dijk, is back to his best once again. After being put under scrutiny for some dodgy performances post-injury, VVD has been nothing but class at the back for Liverpool this season, having not put a foot wrong almost everytime he got fielded.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold

TAA is often lambasted for his defensive shortcomings but he has been on top form both defensive and attacking-wise. Of the left wingers Trent has faced this season in the Premier League, only one (Anthony Gordon) has been able to outsmart him and that was only twice too. The Liverpool-born vice captain also broke the assist record for a defender, thus cementing his place among the greats.

DM: Declan Rice

Arsenal has been a shadow of their former selves this season attacking-wise but have been grinding wins away and it’s all because of one man… Declan Rice. Bought for a fee just under 110m Euros, Arsenal fans feel as though they struck a bargain nonetheless as Rice has been unreal for them.

Since joining the Gunners, Declan Rice has had a galvanising influence on that Arsenal team, elevating their midfield with steel, security, that killer touch, and some really important goals in the dying moments of the game.

DM: Rodri

Arguably the most influential central midfielder in the world in 2023, Rodri was not only the lynchpin of an all-conquering City side that won the treble and later on the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, but also of the Nations League-winning Spanish national team.

To show how integral and irreplaceable Rodri is for Pep’s Man City, they have either lost or drawn every match he didn’t feature in this season.

AM: Bernardo Silva

Probably one of the best midfielders in the world at this point in time, Silva has been one of the mainstay players in Pep Guardiola’s Man City ever since arriving from AS Monaco in 2018.

Renowned for his creativity, dribbling, stamina, versatility, and work-rate, Silva has been the one holding it all up offensively, more especially with KDB having been missing in action for months due to an injury.

RW: Mohamed Salah

Currently topping the goalscoring and chance creation charts, Mohamed Salah is ever-so consistent and obviously cements his place in this Team of the season. With his 14 goals and 8 assists, Salah stands alone at the very top and could prove to be a huge miss for Liverpool in January as AFCON commences then.

LW: Hueng-Min Son

I think it’s time we realize how good Son Heung Min has been over the last five seasons. Him and Kane are the reason why Tottenham Hotspurs have been able to consistently challenge for top 4. This season alone, he has already scored 12 goals and chipped in a further 5 assists in the Premier League (Only Mo Salah and Erling Haaland have more goals).

ST: Jarrod Bowen

I could have easily went for Erling Haaland at striker but Jarrod Bowen deserves to be given his flowers as he’s doing it at a lesser top club with basically mediocre players around him.

Nonetheless, ladies and gentlemen Jarrod Bowen is back to banging goals on a consistent level for the Hammers, scoring 11 in 19 games. Part of the reason why he’s flying yet again might be due to the acquisition of Mohamed Kudus, who has been class, but Bowen is on a league of his own when it comes to scoring goals for the Hammers, whom for the longest of time have been in need of a consistent scorer.
