The 2023/24 English Premier League season is well underway and while some debutants hit the ground running for their new clubs, some had first appearances to forget donning the colors of their new football teams. In this blog article, we will be looking at how some teams have faired thus far with only a month back of playing club football.
Gameweek 1:
The new season started off with reigning champions Manchester City taking on last season’s Skybet Championship champions Burnley. Coming up against his former coach at Manchester City, Vincent Kompany made sure not make the first game back easy for Pep Guardiola and his boys. Although his efforts would end up in vain, Burnley displayed some entertaining football as they lost 3-0 to an Erling Haaland brace and a Rodri pounce at goal after a scramble for the ball inside the box.
Arsenal would be the only big six club playing on Saturday as the others played on Sunday and Monday respectively, and the Gunners didn’t disappoint, as Bukayo Saka entertained fans to a scorcher of a goal. That goal would be enough for the Gunners as they went on to win 2-1 vs Nottingham Forrest. It was to nobody’s surprise though that the Gunners would start off on a strong foot as they look to challenge for the title again after coming so close last season.
On the very same day, Newcastle won 5-1 against a newly-rejuvenated Aston Villa team, with Newcastle’s record signing Alexander Isak grabbing himself a brace. Debutants Sandro Tonali and Moussa Diaby both got debut goals for their new clubs.
The first super Sunday back was a spectacle to watch as it featured two teams who have been embroiled in transfer tussles way before they could face each other. Liverpool and Chelsea put on a show as they drew 1-1, with both teams being denied a goal each by VAR.
This game also brought an end to Mohamed Salah’s streak of scoring in every one of Liverpool season openers since signing for them in 2017.
Like the weekends games were not entertaining enough, the Man United vs Wolves would be embroiled in a scandal that ended up with referees officiating that game being suspended.
Newly signed Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana seemed to have fouled a Wolves player in the dying moments of the game and to his luck, VAR and the referee didn’t call it. The blunder would prove costly to the referees though as they were suspended from officiating the following gameweek.
Gameweek 2:
Gameweek 2 featured Liverpool vs Bournemouth which ended in a 3-1 win courtesy of goals from Luis Diaz, Mo Salah and Diogo Jota. New signee Alexis Mac Allister got a red card in the match as the reds held on, but his suspension would later be rescinded upon further review.
Up next was a nervy matchup between Manchester City and Newcastle united. Julian Alvarez’s goal would be the definitive decider as City went 2/2 in as many games.
Other exciting matchups for gameweek 2 were Manchester United vs Tottenham and Chelsea’s shock defeat to West Ham.
James Ward-Prowse and James Maddison ran the show in gameweek 2 as both their teams won convincingly against their said opponents. Spurs won 2-0 against the red devils while the hammers pummeled Chelsea to a 3-1 win in which Enzo Fernandez missed a penalty while Moises Caicedo conceded one in the dying moments of the game.
Gameweek 3:
GW3 kicked off with a Friday night fixture between Chelsea and Luton. 2014 Goldenboy winner Raheem Sterling grabbed himself a brace as Senegal’s Nicolas Jackson also registered himself in the scoresheet to make it 0 wins in three games for the recently promoted Luton.
Saturday featured visits to the Emirates and Old Trafford. Arsenal went a goal down in the first half only to turn things around in the 70th minute and end up leading 2-1. Nonetheless, Fulham would go on to salvage a point against the Gunners as Aaron Ramsdale got caught off his line by Palhinha.
Man United also went into halftime behind courtesy of conceding 2 goals to Nottingham Forrest whose striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in fine form – scoring in 7 consecutive games for Nottingham. Unlike Arsenal, the red devils came back and won the game 3-2 to earn Ten Hag’s men their second win of the season.
GW3’s Super Sunday started off with a scrappy 2-1 win to Manchester City vs Sheffield United. Erling Haaland missed from the spot only to redeem himself later in the game with a goal to put them a goal up.
Sheffield fought back in the dying moments and scored a goal only for Rodri, who has been in fine form since last season, to rescue City to a 2-1 win.
Newcastle vs Liverpool would steal the show though as 10 man Liverpool came back from being a goal down to defeat the toons 2-1. Substitute Darwin Nunez had ice in his veins as he singlehandedly downed Newcastle in the dying moments, grabbing the goal that inspired the comeback 4 minutes upon coming in.
