Liverpool have announced that World cup winning midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and Hungarian starlet Dominik Szoboszlai will be joining the Merseyside reds, and with that comes a well-awaited rejuvenation to Liverpool’s midfield that has been subpar and not exactly creative since Coutinho’s departure.
Going back to Jurgen Klopp’s transfer market genius, not only are the two aforementioned midfielders appealing to the eye, football-wise of course, they’re also young.
At the time of their signings, Mac Allister, who scored 10 times for Brighton last season, is said to be 24 and Szoboszlai just 22 years of age. Teammates and integral first-team players Cody Gakpo(24), Darwin Nunez(24), Ibrahima Konate(24), and Trent Alexander-Arnold(24) are also around the same age, thus inspiring a sense of rebuild at Liverpool.
At the end of the 2022/23 season, Liverpool were ranked 16th when it comes to the average squad age in the Premier League, only ahead of Man City, West Ham, Tottenham, and Fulham.
Although it was hard to pinpoint exactly what was triggering the Reds’ slump with defensive fragilities mixed with a lack of intensity and a disjointed attack all readily cited, the profile of the squad has been due to be put under the microscope with nine senior players aged 30 and over, seven of whom sit inside the top 12 for the most minutes played by a Red this season.
At one point last season, Liverpool were ranked 18th in the average squad age, thus to show how Liverpool’s perceived dominance at the top alongside Man City was a season or two away from ending, with the 2022/23 season a prime example of what happens when you don’t inject some young, fresh blood into your midfield.

Anyhow, Klopp will be hoping to change his fortunes as a Liverpool squad with young players such as Kelleher, Konate, Gomez, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Diaz, Jones, Elliott, Carvalho, Doak, Bajcetic and possibly Manu Kone or Romeo Lavia, might leave Klopp’s Liverpool relishing to contend on all fronts yet again.
